Maybe Tomorrow

What if a time traveler fell in love with someone from the past? What if despite that connection, they couldn’t stay? What does it mean to belong somewhere? Is belonging a place, or a person?

These are the questions I explored with this short.

The path from Development to Post is always interesting

In the case of Missing Him, the film started as a completely different idea. This short was intended as a ‘proof of concept’ for my future junior piece. I needed to prove to my advisors that a period piece set in the early 1900’s would be possible. The original idea was very simple, my favorite monologue performed by two very talented actors in the period costumes I intended to use.

These two actors gave an incredible performance, and I decided to do more with the footage than I anticipated. In the editing room, I focused entirely on how they reacted to each other and cut out all of the dialogue. From there, a new story emerged.

Mistakes as opportunities for creativity

Because of a scheduling error, our actress had piercings and colored nails for the day of the shoot- not very period-accurate for the 1900s.

However, this discrepancy side by side with the actress’s appearance in other short films of mine has opened a new, very compelling possibility.

Perhaps this woman looks out of place because she is! A time traveler who now must choose between going home, and staying behind.
